Greensboro artist John Gibbs will be exhibiting at the Sister Galleries of the Arts Council from July 29th through September 10th. He has titled the show “Linear Paintings” because of the gestural line drawing within his works. The continuos line drawing technique is like a drawing style of painting that goes back to his illustrative training. The line is an integral part of the way he paints. Today John is inspired a lot by landscapes, and enjoys doing cloudscapes. He has always gone to museums and looked at the quality in work in the artists that have come before him. He wants to produce something as good as what he’s seen in the museums and around. Music is also an influence, listening to a lot of college radio. He can be inspired by lyrics or just the rhythm itself.

"Cross Roads" works by David Davenport
Opening Reception July 29th from 6:30-8:30pm
free and open to the public (wine and hors d'oeuvres served
David Davenport has been probing and searching his subconscious through various mediums and techniques in an attempt to discover content and beauty in his own voice. This time-honored search into the unknown has been expressed through drawing, painting, collage and assemblage. Through this search he has developed a visual vocabulary, an inner structure, signs to focus content and meaning in the art work. The language of landscape is always present in his work which ranges from small works in watercolor and oil to miniature scenes on a narrow channel (titled “Tracks”) and large multi-view paintings (titled “Memory Maps”) defined by a grid-like structure. The landscape and symbolic places in the landscape always penetrate with a personal style and content. Time, pictorial space, the landscape, and symbols of place are painted in a variety of moods and styles in an ongoing process of rediscovering the past. David says, “my paintings are about memories and the many layers there are before you get to them.”
